To our daughters

Here's the thing, one of my mantras to my daughters has been:
 "Don't be afraid to try.
If you have to already be an expert, you will never get to learn."

But have they heard me?

I once heard Demi Moore say she wanted her daughters to know it is
okay to be vulnerable.
I think we are saying the same thing.
Mostly.
Have Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Belle heard her?
(Who knew Demi and I have more than just our uncommonly good looks in common?)

I think this is another way to say it:
(This has been on my inspiration board for so long, I can't cite the source.  I believe Art Jewelry magazine.

Learning can be great.
Do it.
Try something new.
Be vulnerable.
Today.
And don't be an expert.
Yet.

Then tell me about it.

Coincidentally, this tidbit was sent by my friend Oprah this AM:
"Every day is an opportunity to learn something or discover something or someplace.  Be curious, play, go out on a limb, walk a different way to work, try a new food at dinner and keep learning and growing."

I think being able to learn something new allows us to maintain a bit of our inner child. For me it is the want...no the need, to find something new and awesome in every day. I love my little adventures into things I am not an expert in like taking horseback riding lessons or a new dog (i am way over my quota there so...) creating something new that even if following a pattern, no one has done it exactly like I did. We need to allow ourselves to not always be the expert -- even in things we think we are expert on. If you think you are an expert than you could miss out on some valuable and different information that ultimately could help you. Ok, so sometimes you have to wade through a lot of stuff you already know but you will find out that everyone has a jewel to offer somewhere!

Well said. That's why I like reading your blogs.

This AM, I was trying a new exercise video that is performed while sitting on the floor (tendonitis is causing me to put my other forms of cardiovasular improvement on hold for a while).
This video is pilates related, and pretty tough. I caught myself thinking I couldn't do this well enough to get a good workout because I wasn't any good at it. Can you believe it? Right after I posted this blog?! Good thing I caught myself. Now I can keep learning...
